Purpose:
Facebook is the 4th most used website in the world with over 200 million active users. This internet site (www.facebook.com) allows users to create a profile and network with one another as "friends." Friends then have the ability to share pictures, videos, chat online and write messages on each other's walls. Facebook also has an array of applications that allow users to join a "cause," create interest groups, advertise online and more. Due to the quantity of users and the nature of network, Facebook has an enormous amount of potential for the social organizing world. Bonner finds that its network is utilizing Facebook for recruiting, announcements, networking for preview weekends, alumni groups, event awareness, sharing pictures and individual social connections with other members on campus and nationally, as well. We encourage all of our campuses to explore Facebook as a tool for their Bonner Program.

Causes
Facebook People:
Facebook people consist of individual profiles created for each person who joins Facebook. Some organizations create a profile for their organization or club, as if they were a "person." The following Bonner campuses have created "fake" individuals to represent their programs:
Berry College: Berry Bonner Scholars
Concord College: Bonner House
DePauw University: DePauw Bonner Scholars
Guilford College: Bonner Love
Rhodes Colleges: Rhodes Bonners
Total Campuses: 5
Facebook Groups:
Facebook groups are a great way to organize for an event, an issue or an organization. Why create a Facebook group? For example, the National Bonner Network group has 964 members. If we were hosting an event related to an anti-hunger initiative, we would have access to hundreds of people who may be organized and mobilized to address the issue. It also is a great way to get Bonner announcements or job postings to our network.
We have found the following group information for our network. (Please note, search word=Bonner. Other searches may yield different results if we search by school, etc).

Facebook Fan Page:
Facebook Fan pages are very similar to Bonner groups, but have some slight differences in applications available to their users. According to the Search Engine Journal (www.searchenginejournal.com), Fan pages are better for longer term relationships, while groups are better for short, quick discussions and activity. Pages are available to non-registered individuals and track visitor statistics for their pages. Additionally, they have a feature that allows for related event creation and invitation. However, both pages and groups have the ability to conduct discussions, send messages, wall posts, sharing pictures and uploading video or links. The Bonner Foundation has given prior workshops on how one may utilize this feature within their campus and Bonner Program.
The following Bonner Campuses utilize Fan Pages:
Names/Number of Fans:
Amherst College: Amherst College Bonner Fellows (38 Fans)
Bonner Foundation: Bonner Foundation (64 fans)
Concord University: The Bonner House for Campus-Wide Community Service at Concord University (10 Fans)
Ferrum College: Ferrum Bonner Program (25 fans)
Stetson University: Stetson Bonner Scholars Program (30 fans)
University of Richmond: Bonner Center for Civic Engagement (15 fans)
Total Fan Pages: 6
Total Number of Fans: 182
Facebook Events
Facebook Events allow organizers to create awareness and publicize events to their network or beyond. Can you imagine if you could connect with the hundreds of friends each Bonner is networked.
As of 6/25/2009, the following campuses had events posted:
Ferrum College: New Bonner Orientation (8/16/2009, 6 confirmed attending)
Facebook Advertisements:
Facebook Advertisements allow schools to specifically target and track your audience. It is an easy four step process. You can also choose key words or groups that you would like the ad to specifically target. Then Facebook will then calculate the number of individuals that your ad will go out to. By utilizing the pay per click option, this advertisement feature can be a very low cost option for your program or event.
