Bonner Sub-Grantee Initiative Reports

Each of the campuses below is working to incorporate social media in an intensive way, organizing around one specific issue area in partnership with one or a few identified community agencies.
- Amherst College • Amherst, MA: Amherst College is focusing on enhancing its service on youth and education issues, with an emphasis on creating a Social Media Tools Training Program that will build the capacity of two primary partners, El Arco Iris and the Pipeline Project.
- College of Saint Benedict / Saint John’s University • St. Joseph, MN: CSB is working to promote awareness about homelessness and hunger in their area. They are using social media to organize campus and community events, creating videos, and reaching out to others to serve with Place of Hope, a multi-service agency.
- Concord University • Concord, WV: Concord is working in partnership with several homeless serving organizations in their region and with the National Coalition for the Homeless nationally to heighten attention and engagement in serving homeless individuals, as well as educate the broader public about solutions.
- Davidson College • Davidson, NC: Davidson is working to drive higher and deeper levels of student involvement in service with agencies in the Davidson area, working in partnership with the Lake Norman Community Development Council and its key agencies, by uniquely using Web-based tools for outreach on campus.
- Guilford College • Greensboro, NC: Guilford is working to promote service, activism, and educational around immigration issues in the Greensboro, NC area. They are working with the African Services Coalition, Newcomers School, and Glenhaven Multicultural Center as key partners, using video and other social media tools to create educational opportunities.
- Hamilton College • Clinton, NY: Hamilton is working in innovative ways to expand services and economic opportunities for local refugee and immigrant populations. They are using policy research, issue briefs, video, blogs, and wikis to communicate to the broader campus and community about the needs of this population and how to get involved.
- Macalester College • Saint Paul, MN: Macalester is working to utilize web-based and social media tools to promote college access among youth in the greater Twin Cities area. Partnering with Breakthrough Anywhere Initiative and Opportunities Abound, they hope to use wikis, video, and other tools to recruit underrepresented youth into college.
- Pfeiffer University • Misenheimer, NC: Pfeiffer is working to address educational attainment among at-risk youth, focusing in particular on Albemarle High School and Nazareth Children’s Home. They are utilizing web-based tools to reach out to students and broader community volunteers, enhance the schools’ resource base, and engage other citizens in tutoring and other enrichment activities.
- Ripon College • Ripon, WI: Ripon is aiming to use social media tools to create a campus and community movement around local agriculture and food policy, also a strategy for economic and community development. Partnering with the Main Street initiative in Ripon, they hope to use Facebook, wikis, videos, and other tools to drive student engagement around this issue.
- Stetson University • DeLand, FL: Stetson is working to enhance their work on youth development and empowerment with a local initiative CAUSE, started and led by youth at Stetson and in the local communities of Spring Hill and Pierson. It will use Facebook, wikis, videos, blogs and other social media to raise funds, promote volunteerism, and enhance the capacity of youth-oriented programs.
- The College of New Jersey • Ewing, NJ: TCNJ is working to promote broad campus involvement in community service through Community Engaged Learning Days and upper-level civic engagement coursework that reaches most students on campus. In addition, they are focusing on using social media tools to deepen the impact and engagement with those serving in the youth development area, developing curricula, integrating sustainability and environmental education, and broadening community volunteerism.
- Tusculum College • Greeneville, TN: Tusculum is working to address issues of diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion on campus and in the broader community. They are partnering with the George Clem Multicultural Center to create videos and other educational materials that will be shared via YouTube, wikis, and in-person educational events to address these issues and promote healthy community.
- University of California Berkeley • Berkeley, CA: UC Berkeley is working to promote the effectiveness of its campus’s service and civic work in education and youth development. They are creating videos to teach about educational equity to the broader campus and community, in order to raise awareness of educational achievement and to promote higher levels of involvement, resources, and impact within their school and educational partners.
- University of Louisville • Louisville, KY: U of L is working to promote community and campus involvement around social justice and diversity issues. Partnering with the Frazier International History Museum, U of L is using social media tools—combined with training—to create interactive, educational activities for the broader museum audience that promote diversity awareness and community involvement.
- University of New Mexico • Albuquerque, NM: UNM is focusing on how to create and utilize social media within its broader civic engagement work, focusing first on youth development. They are creating videos, training and educational programming, blogs for reflection, and other tools that promote media access by youth and several youth-serving non-profit partners.
- West Virginia Wesleyan College • Buckhannon, WV: WVWC is focusing on enhancing the work of the Main Street Arts Co-Operative through social media tools, including videos, YouTube, blogging, online fundraising, and Facebook. They hope to build the capacity of this agency to conduct its broader economic and community development work with the arts, engaging students and other community supporters.
