Social Media Tool Catalog

Wikis:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using wikis (e.g., for planning, project management, profiles, etc.) on campus and for this initiative.  Please link the wikis your campus has created.

  • We have developed a wiki page for our Concord University Coalition for the Homeless, which provides links to our homelessness awareness videos and links,  It also provides links to volunteer opportunities in the area related to homelessness and  resources for those experiencing homelessness or that are in danger of experiencing homelessness. (http://volunteer.concord.edu/coalition/).  We are also developing our wiki and tranisitioning much of our website over to the wiki to make it easier to update for future VISTAs and doing our PolicyOptions drafting there. (http://cuserve.pbworks.com/)

Website:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using your campus/center's website (e.g., for planning, project management, profiles, etc.) on campus and for this initiative.  Please link the relevant webpages your campus has created.

  • We have developed a volunteer website designed to share regional service opportunities. In addition, the website features the campus-wide service activities. (http://volunteer.concord.edu/) We have integrated several tools into the website to make it more visually appealing, interactive, useful, and informative. These include embedded YouTube and Facebook videos, Slide.com slideshows, Google Maps, and Google Calendars. We have also used Google Docs spreadsheet forms to allow users to submti service opportunities and to sign up for service trips.

Videos:  Please add a bullet describing any videos you have created or are working on.  Please embed a link to any completed videos.

YouTube:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using YouTube (e.g., posting videos created, playlists you have) and if you have a user account/channel. Please link to your YouTube account/channel (and playlists if relevant).

  • We have used YouTube to share nearly all of our videos on our YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/cuserve. We created playlists for our before and after interviews with students participating in our Student Homeless Challenge Project ,and one for our vlogs in Nashville (see above). We have also favorited many videos of interest to us or our issues. Here is a playlist of videos we've favorited:

Facebook:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using Facebook (e.g., publicizing events, posting media, ads, etc. Please note how to find your Facebook Group or Fan Page.

  • We created a Bonner House  profile on Concord that can be "friended" and used to reach us. (http://www.facebook.com/bonnerhouse) We also use the status updates feature to share news, events, and links and to join groups and events we support or cosponsor. We even use Facebook chat to speak with students on their own schedules and terms. In addition, we created a fan page, which has had little success and we honestly don't recommend utilizing: (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Athens-WV/The-Bonner-House-for-Campus-Wide-Community-Service-at-Concord-University/61526631211) We also created several Facebook groups, our primary one being CU SERVE, which shares service opportunities and profiles student service. (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58468932112)  In addition, we have further developed our Bonner Scholars group, Bonner Love (Concord Bonner Scholars) to share Bonner Scholar specific information and for alumni networking. (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58468932112) We also devleoped a group specific to our Serve 2.0 goals in raising awareness of the issue of homelessness called the Concord University Coalition for the Homeless. (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58468932112) Lastly, we created a group for our PolicyOptions.org research team. (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=58468932112). We also used Facebook events to directly invite students, faculty, and staff  to our service trips and events. We then also posted these events in our status updates and links. We post many of our videos and photos on Facebook and tag all involved parties in them in order to solicit more views and get our information on more people's news feeds.  Also, we changed our relationship status to being "In a Relationship with Concord Sac", the Student Activities Committee profile, to emphasize our partnership in devleoping service activities for students alongside them and to facilitate traffic between our profiles. In addition, we have also purchased Facebook advertisements to promote our events.

Ning (Bonner Network Forum):  Please add a bullet describing how you are using Ning (the Bonner Network Forum groups or your own site) for discussions, RSS feeds, blogs, etc. Please link to your campus's group/main page on Ning.

  • We have posted several of our videos and our favorite videos on the Bonner Network Forum on Ning and we remain active in Bonner Forum groups and in sharing our blogs. We have chosen not to create any groups or profiles that are Concord-specific there and have also chosen not to develop our own Ning at this time. Instead, we have focused our energy on Facebook.

Blogs:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using Blogs for discussions, reflection, etc.  Please link to any blog you have.

  • We used Blogger to create two blogs for service reflection. The first was for our Alternative Spring Break trip to Nashville, Tennessee, which features both blog and vlog entries at http://cuasb.blogspot.com/ and for our Freshmen Service Trip at http://cubonner.blogspot.com/.

Other Media:  Please add bullets describing any other social media (e.g., Wiggio, Twitter, Volunteer Match, PolicyOptions Wiki) that your program/project is using.  Please link to any relevant sites/pages.

  • Blog TV: During our Box City 2009 fundraising and awareness event for Scottie's Place, we did a live feed of that could be watched around the world.  We have created a profile there, but we don't have anything posted at the moment as we are not doing regular live shows: http://www.blogtv.com/People/servecu
  • Twitter: We have created a Twitter feed for our Concord University Coalition for the Homeless which features links to articles and videos ont he issue of homelessness. We choose the username happentoanyone because homelessness can happen to anyone. http://twitter.com/happentoanyone. We embedded this in our wiki site and linked it to our Facebook account and Jesse Call's Bonner Network Forum profile.
  • Slide.com:  We use Slide.com to create photo slideshows that are more visually appealing and easily embeddable on our website.
    • Example:
  • Slideshare.net: We have used Slideshare to embed PowerPoint presenations online that you can view within a webpage.
  • Google Tools: We have used Google Docs spreadsheet forms for trip sign-ups and service opportunitiy submissions. In addition, we have used Google Maps and Google Calendars to show website visitors when and  where service opporunities exist. (http://volunteer.concord.edu/)

Other Students, Faculty, Campus Groups/Departments, and Community Constituents Engaged

Please summarize in a few words/sentences how your program/project has reached out to, involved, or engaged:

  • Other Bonners: Through the Bonner Freshmen Service Trip to Washington, D.C., Bonner Scholars were asked during the service of passing out meals in Franklin and  McPherson Squares to meet with and have discussions with the people they met and then to ask some of them if they might be interested in sharing their story with those who weren;t able to visit them today by doing a video interview. The students would then either directly interview or assist in interviewing our video participants. We are planning to involve Bonner Scholars in our future community partner video productions.
  • Students at large: Our service trips have been open to all students and these students agreed to participate in online jounraling through vlogs or blogs for our Nashville alternative spring break trip and through before and after video interviews for the Student Homeless Challenge Project in Washington, D.C. All of our online resoruces and stories are available for use by the general public and geared towards the Concord student body at large.
  • Campus Groups/Departments: We recently partnered with the Admissions office to incluide a service component in the Students of Excellence Summer Academy that they hold each year, Through that, we are creating a highlight video of the week which will help with future promotion of both the Academy and the Bonner Scholars Program. In addition, we had the students produce their own issue awareness videos on issues of their choosing as a project during the week and we posted them on our YouTube channel and on Facebook. We have recieved widespread praise from throughout the University on our videos.
  • Community Constituents: Our before and after interviews for the Student Homeless Challenge Project are featured on the blog for the National Coalition for the Homeless as a recruitment tool. In addition, our Street Sense video was "favorited" by the National Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that helped found the paper.
