Juniors — environment
Seniors — health care
Brief Overview
Davidson plans to integrate social media tools in order to educate and promote broader campus involvement in community service, specifically on four issues. A Wiki page will be a source of information on the issues of healthcare, the environment, housing, and education. Here students and other visitors to the site will be able to access information about the importance of these issues, the problems many people face with these issues and what effect they have on their community. Blogs will also be integrated for sharing information and reflection. In addition, they plan to implement a campus-wide Change Challenge to catalyze higher levels of involvement in service.

Social Media Tools to Be Used
Videos, YouTube, Wikis, Blogs, Campus Website
Context and Rationale (Explanation of Tools)
The Community Service Office at Davidson College wants to utilize this initiative to strengthen the culture of service campus-wide. They hope to create a buzz that begins to widen the student audience and catalyze higher levels of student engagement in service. They plan to integrate social media tools in order to educate and advertise community service in a unique way. They will develop a Wiki page as a source of information on the issues of healthcare, the environment, housing, and education. Here visitors to our site will be able to access information about the importance of these issues, the problems many people face with these issues and what effect they have on their community.
Blogs will also be implemented in our project in order to keep spectators involved in what participants are doing in the Change Challenge. It is our hope that these blogs will provide another opportunity for involvement as well as a chance to inspire those who read them.
In addition to our wiki page and blogs, we will use our usual method of advertisement, flyers. They have always been a good mechanism to make the community more aware of what is going on in the community service office. We will use the traditional flyer to then advertise on the plasma television screens in the College Union and we will use the flyer graphics on our website, Facebook site and Wiki page. Furthermore, we will use the on campus student run television show (The Davidson Show) to publicize the Change Challenge in an even more unique way to stir interest in the initiative on campus and beyond. People view the show on campus as well as online and it has received much buzz recently in college publications.
Link to Campus Organizing Strategies
Davidson's initiative will also work with existing recruitment and program management strategies employed by the campus-wide center. Large-scale advertising in the student center (using TV monitors), as well as fliers, ads, and other traditional means will also be utilized to promote the Change Challenge and service, education, and advocacy opportunities on the four issues highlighted.
Goals of Initiative
- Publicize the Community Service Office and its programs through increased traffic to the website and Wiki
- Increase involvement in this service initiative beyond the “usual suspects”
- Provide a fresh and fun approach to issue education and helping
- Educate the public about issues of education, housing/homelessness, environment and health care
