One Paragraph Description

Macalester is working to utilize web-based and social media tools to promote college access among youth in the greater Twin Cities area.  Partnering with Breakthrough Anywhere Initiative and Opportunities Abound, they hope to use wikis, video, and other tools to recruit underrepresented youth into college.

Wikis:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using wikis (e.g., for planning, project management, profiles, etc.) on campus and for this initiative.  Please link the wikis your campus has created.

  • The PBWiki platform will be used in leiu of the Macalester Civic Engagement Center website. The CEC maintains full control of the website, so students in the Bonner program as well as Off-Campus Student Employment and Leaders in Service will not be able to access/edit information on the website. The Wiki will be used for several purposes:
    • Increasing the accessibility of the Civic Engagement Center to the Macalester community as well as the school's community partners by creating a platform that is easy to use.
    • Provide space for students to post notifications about events, volunteer opportunities, and reflection sessions.
    • Wikis will be used for highlighting videos for the Bonner Video Project.

Website:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using your campus/center's website (e.g., for planning, project management, profiles, etc.) on campus and for this initiative.  Please link the relevant webpages your campus has created.

  • The Macalester Civic Engagement Center's website contains profiles of community partners, student leaders, and staff working at the CEC. It also provides resources for those interested in community work by highlighting one-time volunteer events as well as community-based research, service-learning projects, first-year programs (Bonner, Lives of Committment, etc), and off-campus student employment opportnunites.
  • Access and control of the site is limited to the Department Coordinator.

Videos:  Please add a bullet describing any videos you have created or are working on.  Please embed a link to any completed videos.

  • During the school year, we are focusing on a number of video projects:
    • Happy Bonners: This video will put a spotlight on where Bonners serve, travel, and bond.
    • Spotlight on Service: This series of videos will feature an academic/office department at Macalester and how that particular department facilitates, encourages, and teaches civic engagement. The series will also feature community partners and give a glimpse of how each organization helps students relate their work to the classroom.

YouTube:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using YouTube (e.g., posting videos created, playlists you have) and if you have a user account/channel. Please link to your YouTube account/channel (and playlists if relevant).

  • Our Civic Engagement Center has a YouTube account and videos will be added there soon.

Facebook:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using Facebook (e.g., publicizing events, posting media, ads, etc. Please note how to find your Facebook Group or Fan Page.

  • Facebook has been used recently to primarily answer the questions of the incoming Bonner class. However, as the year progresses, Facebook will be used as a tool to remind students of events hosted by the CEC, and as a tool of communication (and maybe even study) for Bonner projects and initiatives.

Ning (Bonner Network Forum):  Please add a bullet describing how you are using Ning (the Bonner Network Forum groups or your own site) for discussions, RSS feeds, blogs, etc. Please link to your campus's group/main page on Ning.

  • Because the Civic Engagement Center has great web tools and has to keep track of many accounts, we have not started a Ning account. We are familiarizing ourselves with the wiki, improving the CEC site, and boosting web presence on Facebook.

Blogs:  Please add a bullet describing how you are using Blogs for discussions, reflection, etc.  Please link to any blog you have.

  • Reflections that our Bonner class had were done in person during an hour-long reflection period with our peers. Online discussions that we've had happened mostly on Moodle for our first-year course, and informally on Facebook (though these informal discussions happen rarely).

Other Media:  Please add bullets describing any other social media (e.g., Wiggio, Twitter, Volunteer Match, PolicyOptions Wiki) that your program/project is using.  Please link to any relevant sites/pages.

  • We are currently participating in the PolicyOptions Wiki. Our Lilly Fellows are conducting policy research for this initiative.

Other Students, Faculty, Campus Groups/Departments, and Community Constituents Engaged

Please summarize in a few words/sentences how your program/project has reached out to, involved, or engaged:

  • Other Bonners: Other Bonners have been involved with helping create the Bonner video project, Happy Bonners.
  • Students at large:
  • Campus Groups/Departments:
  • Community Constituents:
