One Paragraph Description

Ripon is aiming to use social media tools to create a campus and community movement around local agriculture and food policy, also a strategy for economic and community development. Partnering with the Main Street initiative in Ripon, they hope to use Facebook, wikis, videos, and other tools to drive student engagement around this issue. Through networking with various community agencies, local growers and campus offices during the Spring 2009 semester, two goals have emerged: the first is to get Ripon College Food Service to buy local produce and incorporate it into campus dining options; the second is to develop community and rooftop gardens on the campus, and share these resources with the broader community.

Summary of Activities: Cumulative

Please add a few bullets that summarize the work your program has done related to Serve 2.0 from first learning of the initiative.  This might include web media you've developed (such as wikis, videos), students/staff you've engaged, planning meetings, educational activities/trainings, and service events or activities sponsored in relation to this work.

Sub-Grant Proposal

  • Events/Meetings held or attended: Hosted one meeting for campus and community to discus the logistics of a community garden on Monday, June 22, 2009. The agenda has been uploaded to our Ning site. The next meeting will be Monday, July 6 at the Ripon Public Library.
  • Primary social media developed/utilized: Facebook was the first social media tool used for this project--we used to to cast the net wide to gain supporters for increased local food education on the Ripon College campus. More recently we launched the Ning site for RIPEN, and this has served as the home page and hub for local food educational activity in Ripon.
  • Trainings/educational activities held or attended: Attended Going Green and Sustainability webinar at a University of Wisconsin extension office in Fond du Lac, WI on Tuesday, June 2, 2009.
  • Service/related events held or organized: The proposed community and/or rooftop garends on campus will depend 100% on volunteer work--from Bonner Leaders, other Ripon College students, college faculty and staff, and community volunteers.

Broader Serve 2.0 Integration on Campus

  • Social media developed: We created a PBWorks wiki to serve as a living, breathing asset map for the community: RiponAssetMap. This tool is designed to categorize and sum up the different assets and resources in Ripon, for the use of Bonner Leaders, Ripon College students, faculty and staff, as well as the community. It will serve as an introduction to wiki use to almost all of these groups.
  • Social media utilized: RIPEN's Ning site was launched over the summer, but is already being utilized by Ripon students and faculty, as well as community members (including a Ripon High School student). All of the RIPEN members joined Ning to be in this specific network, that is, they had never used Ning before. RIPEN has then introduced campus and community to this social networking tool.

Other Students, Faculty, Campus Groups/Departments, and Community Constituents Engaged

Please summarize in a few words/sentences how your program/project has reached out to, involved, or engaged:

  • Other Bonners: The rooftop and community gardens this initiative is starting up will depend completely on volunteers to plant, harvest, and otherwise maintain the green spaces. This service site is a natural fit for Ripon Bonner Leaders, who will be offered this service option in the 2009-2010 school year.
  • Students at large: The initiative has invited Ripon College students to participate in meetings organized by R.I.P.E.N. related to starting a community garden through the aforementioned social media tools. We aim to make part of R.I.P.E.N. into a student organization on campus in the fall.
  • Campus Groups/Departments: Leaders of other student organizations (EGOR, Amnesty International, Chefs Anonymous) gave their input on the project last spring and were interviewed for R.I.P.E.N.'s videos. The Ethical Leadership Program's director features in one of the videos and is interested in incorporating local food issues into future studies of ethical issues. Work on R.I.P.E.N. during the summer is being supported by a grant from the ELP. The Food Service and Physical Plant departments are attempting to use more local food in the cafeteria and find land for a community garden on campus.
  • Community Constituents: The Ripon Chamber of Commerce is cooperating with R.I.P.E.N. in the effort to organize a fall festival in the city centered on local food. We plan to contact the Ripon Food Pantry in the future and donate produce from the community garden. Several farmers in the area have offered to give input on the project, donate seeds for the garden, or consider selling to the campus food services.

Goals & Progress for Summer/Fall 2009

Please add three updated goals.  These can be drawn from your proposal, but should be revised according to your accomplished work.

  1. Survey students and local businesses on food use/consumption and interest in local food.
  2. Finalize plans for the community garden and begin work with volunteers.
  3. Alert local media about the initiative.
  4. Prepare our piece of a presentation/summary for the Bonner Fall Directors Meeting (workshop or fair).

Winter/Spring 2010 Goals & Progress

  • Please share how you achieved or made progress towards the goals above.
  • Please specify goals for Winter/Spring 2010
