Second Life

Ideas

  • Create avatars and have meetings in Second Life.
  • Orientations can be hosted in Second Life.
  • We can post video and interact with audio.
  • We could use grant funds to purchase an island in Second Life-- imagine a Bonner Island where all things service take place...
  • From Social Media Survey: I was at a gathering yesterday at U of Akron, talking w/ an IT guy from their library, who noted that reference librarians have set up virtual offices on Second Life to assist students - perhaps we could do the same thing to hold virtual office hours, or - better yet - train up our student leaders to hold reflection sessions in the second life environment from 11 pm - 1 am, while staff and sleeping and students are awake!

Northern Kentucky University hosted a session for faculty about the use of Second Life a few weeks ago. Many faculty are beginning to hold virtual discussions using this service and others have some pretty unique ideas for training in experiential courses. I have been told that University of Kentucky has been actively using this service this year as well, though I don't have the details.
