The Bonner Leader Program at the College of Charleston, in its initial steps, has begun using several Web 2.0 tools. Some of which have come from the suggestions given, or models posted, by other Bonner campuses to whom we are very grateful. We hope that as we continue to grow as a program, and in our web use, that we may offer example innovative tool use to other campuses as well.

The College of Charleston realizes that it is important to the vitality of every college to experiment with the use of these innovative tools. Some of the ways in which CofC has already begun to do so include:

  • Service-Learning Opportunities: A Service-Learning course offered where students partner with local nonprofit organizations, and work with them to create blogs, wikis, youtube videos, and other Web 2.0 tools.
  • YouTube: First-Year Experience* creates YouTube videos to let students know why they should join a Learning Community.
  • YouTube channel: The College has launched an enhanced YouTube channel that can handle hundreds of videos – even ones that are more than an hour long! Follow the link below to subscribe to our channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/collegeofcharleston
  • One Campaign YouTube Challenge: College of Charleston won the 2007, One Campaign’s National YouTube Challenge. Check out this inspiring video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36-4_VSP-fA
  • Facebook: In just one month after launching an official page on Facebook, more than 700 prospective students, current students, alumni and friends have added themselves as fans – This interactive site allows you to add yourself as a fan, write on the College’s Wall and even download a College of Charleston button for your profile. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Charleston-SC/College-of-Charleston/10239169901
  • Voice Threads: Several Communications classes are utilizing Voice Threads. www.voicethread.com
  • CofC News Podcast: Student Activities  sent via listservs are also available as a Podcast on the CofC Website. They can be listened to or downloaded to an iPod.
  • Cougar Television’s “The Breakdown”: An online daily broadcast of news, events, and weather for students of the College of Charleston-www.cougartelevision.com
  • Wallpaper & Ringtones: Students can download College of Charleston wallpaper for their computers and/or ringtones for their phones. http://www.cofc.edu/about/wallpapers.html.
  • My College of Charleston Video Contest: An online video contest open to anyone who loves the College and can show their enthusiasm, experience, or whatever in three minutes or less. http://www.cofc.edu/mycollege/

* The First-Year Experience at the College of Charleston is designed to assist new students with their transition to college and provide them with the skills that will help them succeed throughout their academic careers. The courses also give new students chances to meet other new students at the beginning of the school year, and an opportunity to work closely with top-level faculty.

In an attempt to take a holistic and collaborative approach to what service means we have offered the above examples. We believe that each of these tools is being utilized to promote service in a variety of forms to the students, campus, and community.

Further suggestions from faculty and staff of CofC include:
