Issue Focus Area(s)
Multiple issues (connected to site-based teams) including hunger, homelessness/housing, inclusion/developmental disabilities, education, youth and family services. Five community organizations will be involved.
Brief Overview
At TCNJ, the Bonner Community Scholars are an intentionally diverse group of students who are organized into 13 issue based teams. Each team anchors down the College's relationship with one or two community partner organizations and are driven by the needs and interests of those agencies. As a four-year student and community development program, Bonners have the opportunity to transform themselves, the campus and the community by participating in a range of community-engaged learning activities during their undergraduate career.
TCNJ will emphasize the Serve 2.0 initiative on these key issue areas: hunger, housing, developmental disabilities, urban education, and youth and family services. We will work with the following community partners: Habitat for Humanity, the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, the Academic Sports Academy, Trenton Medical Arts, LifeTies and Visitation Home.
The Serve 2.0 initiative will provide critical support for Bonner Scholars and Community Partners who will engage in a range of activities. These activities include: video document of each team showcasing the community partner they work closely with, the issue area they address, and their story through wikis and videos. In addition, at least one member of each Bonner team will share the impact the service has had on their own life. The social media technologies, such as wikis, YouTube and others, will allow prospective volunteers to review opportunities available, learn about community organizations and utilize the information to serve or to do class based projects relevant to issues that affect the community.

Link to Campus Organizing Strategies
TCNJ's strategy builds upon its programmatic integration of site-based teams across the entire Bonner Program. All Bonners are part of a site-based team beginning in the first year of college. These teams work with the community partner from Orientation on, collaboratively setting goals, carving out students' roles at the sites, and in other ways working to build the partners' capacity and serve the community. All site-based teams are also working to integrate PolicyOptions, with each team to identify and complete an issue brief in 2008-2009. This Serve 2.0 initiative interweaves with these other efforts.
