Issue Focus Area(s)

Arts/Diversity

Brief Overview

University of Louisville in partnership with the Frazier International History Museum will focus on the arts, launching a Leadership Intern Program on topics of social justice and diversity. Tapping into the Museum's exhibitions that including interactive and online applications, University of Louisville student interns will develop new online tools that engage other volunteers and members of the local community in learning about and appreciating diversity and social justice issues in their community. The culmination of the Bonner’s Frazier Museum Leadership Intern Program will be the creation of an online exhibition of Louisville’s non-profit and service organizations and the Frazier Museum’s Fontaine Ferry exhibition. The Bonner community service sites and existing Bonner students will also be involved in the creation of this exhibition.

** In Fall of 2009 the museum will be opening a new World War II exhibit. The exhibit will focus in the local impacts of the war. Interns will have the opportunity to interact with this exhibit from construction to closing.

Key Community Partners

  • The Frazier International History Museum will be the main partner.  The mission of this organization is well-aligned with that of the Bonner Foundation, and the Office of Civic Engagement, Leadership and Service. The mission of the Museum reads: “Our mission is to evoke a passion for the knowledge and understanding of history so that all who pass through our doors may learn from the past, live in the present, and better prepare for the future.”  The Museum strives to present exhibitions that address social justice and diversity issues. An upcoming installation will be displaying artifacts and information about Fontaine Ferry, one of Louisville’s past theme parks. The park was the site and center of much racial tension early in the last century. The program participants will be introduced to this exhibition early in their experience. The Frazier Museum is the only repository of the British Royal Armouries in the United States. The international significance and perspective of this collection is yet another added value to the program. The opportunity for interested students to interact with this non-profit is one of tremendous potential for learning, and limited only by the imagination and goals of the students. As the program develops, individualized student interests in non-profit development, marketing, international history, educational curriculum development, and event planning will be explored.

Social Media Tools to Be Used

Facebook, Videos, YouTube, MySpace, Wikis, Podcasts, Twitter (micro-blogs), Museum's Internet Portal

Context and Rationale (Explanation of Tools)

The primary application utilized to explore the themes and issues detailed will be the Bonner’s Frazier Museum Leadership Interns’ blog site. Through this portal, interns can reflect on the experience of the program and direct visitors to the additional applications, which will feature a variety of platforms. These platforms range from an interactive wiki-site, photo journals, podcasts and live micro-blogging. Additional tools will be employed, including a Facebook and Myspace site to create and cultivate a community presence where interested individuals can track and interact with Bonner’s Frazier Museum Leadership Interns. With the variety of platforms available, a broader experience will be gained, enhancing the educational potential for the Leadership Interns and the community. Another additional benefit will be promoting awareness of the partnerships between the University of Louisville, the Bonner Foundation and the Frazier Museum.

Each application utilized will focus on a particular aspect of Bonner’s Frazier Museum Leadership Intern Program. Through the primary blog site, interns will have the opportunity to reflect on the personal experiences they have encountered. With the photo and video journals, interns can share a visual diary exploring the themes of the Frazier Museum, and particularly the Fontaine Ferry exhibition, a regional treasure that will bridge the gap between generations. Micro-blogging applications, such as Twitter, will allow a one-on-one conversation between the interns and the public. This application will be vital to create an immediate dialogue, generate awareness of social justice and diversity issues, and promote the relationships with the Frazier Museum, the Bonner Foundation, and the community. Finally, the wiki-site is a collaborative platform where interns will extend the relationship to the University of Louisville, Bonner Community Partners, and the community. All of these applications will have a presence on the main blog site portal to manage the flow of information, while developing a multi-layered experience.
