Issue Focus Area(s)
Youth Development/Empowerment
Brief Overview
UNM's Center for Learning and Public Service is learning how to utilize Social Media effectively in their work. They want to educate their community partners and work with youth to learn collectively about how we can use Media for Social Change. It is for this reason that our issue area is Youth Development. They want to develop resources on how to use social media tools and pass the knowledge that they learn on to the communities that they serve. Also, younger generations are growing up very familiar and comfortable with media and we want to learn from them and present how they can use the things they love to create positive changes in their communities. They want to provide access to media tools to students in diverse, low-income communities. Also they want to provide media literacy/education for the children we are working with through our community projects and mentorships.
Key Community Partners

Social Media Tools to Be Used
Videos, YouTube, Blogs, Wikis, Wiggio, Google Earth, Google Documents, and other gadgets
Context and Rationale (Explanation of Tools)
- Videos for Training purposes: By creating video based trainings we will develop an archive of training related resources for Bonner Leaders and community partners, both now and in the future. The Bonner Leaders will receive in-depth practice on creating and facilitating training modules through the use of social media tools that will focus on youth development. These modules will consist of best practices that will be useful for Bonner leaders and community partners. Each video will focus on one particular training exercise, which will consist of step by step instructions and specific examples. These videos will be made in an intriguing and engaging manner as to keep the trainees focused on the content. Training videos will be posted on our own UNM Bonner leader network wiki so that all Bonner leaders and community partners can access our archive at any time.
- Documentation of projects: Our Bonner Leaders work in diverse, low income communities that face different social issues and community problems. Bonner Leaders will partner with community leaders in addressing issues pertaining to youth development in New Mexico and will be required to document all aspects of their project. Furthermore, we hope to submit our videos online via YouTube, social networking sites, and video contests. We hope to create a broader understanding of the importance of taking action towards social change.
- Informative Video to educate Students and Community members on the Bonner Leader program and UNM Service Corps: The overall purpose of the informative video of the UNMSC and the Bonner Leader Program is to raise awareness both in the university and in the community about these programs. We will use the video for recruitment purposes for perspective Bonner Leaders. By creating an informative video, we hope to provide a better understanding of the Bonner program in a fun and engaging way. In this video, we will feature interviews from current Bonner leaders and UNM Service Corps members. Perspective members will hear testimonies from corps members and see specific examples of services provided by our organization. This video will greatly help our recruitment efforts and be used in activities such as tabling, orientation, and explaining our program to perspective community allies. The video will highlight the history of the UNM Service Corps and Bonner Leader program at UNM, our community sites, current projects, and core values of both organizations.
- Blog for Reflection (Praxis): The utilization of the relatively new phenomena of blogging will play a crucial part in our already adopted praxis educational model. The three steps in the cycle of the praxis educational model; Education, Action, and Reflection will continue to guide our practice. Blogs will reflect the third component of the Praxis model, reflection. We plan to use blogs after every monthly training and service projects. In order to have a deeper understanding of theory and practice, the Bonner Leaders will reflect on the impact and importance of service and community. Students can submit blogs anonymously, so we hope this will lead to more honest reflection. Students can also use blogging as a way to ask questions, share challenges and successes. This information will better develop trainings and events so that students can receive the optimal impact. (Paolo Fierre pioneered using the Praxis model while working with illiterate adults in Brazil and highlights it in his book, The Pedagogy of the Oppressed).
- Documentation (travel blogs, workshop blogs): The use of blogs will play an important part in our Bonner Leader travels. It will be a requirement for all Bonner Leaders to blog on their experiences during any Bonner related trips. This will become increasingly relevant in the months to come as we plan two international trips for summer 2009 as well as other domestic travels. Our organization will adopt this practice permanently, and thus it will be a requirement for all members that want to travel with our program. We will create a blogging space on Blogspot.com and it will be available people not only in our organization, but to other Bonner programs. Our blog space will be linked with our organization's wiki as well as other partner organization's websites to expand the overall reading base of our blogs.
- Wiki and Central Database: The UNMSC Bonner Wiki will act as a central database for all Bonner activities. We will use the Bonner Foundation’s wiki as a template to create the UNMSC Bonner Wiki. The wiki will serve as a place to house many social media tools, resources, as well as showcase the service project videos and informative videos. The emphasis will be primarily on youth development, and resources materials including video modules, written training documents, and links to websites will be available. Bonner Leaders will provide community partners the tools to access this database. By incorporating wikis, in addition to our traditional web site, we are able to continually include community members in our decisions making process.
- Communication (external and internal): The wiki server will also serve as a space for anyone interested in the Bonner Leader Program to learn about what Bonners are doing around the city, state, and country. Anyone can access materials and resources as well as receive information on any special events that the Bonners are involved in. This will also help our internal communication because we can post events and documents that pertain to Bonner Leaders without having to constantly send emails to members. The wiki will help with the overall transparency and clarity of our organization.
- Wiggio for Group Work: We will use the Wiggio server to disseminate information such as meetings, documents, and other organizational tools to UNM Bonner Leaders. This social media tool will greatly help the transmission and availability of information pertaining to Bonner leader activities. All Bonner Leaders will be trained and become familiarized with this system so that they can use it on an everyday basis. We will also encourage Bonner Leaders to utilize this tool in their community based sites to facilitate better group work with their community partners. Once Bonner Leaders become efficient with this tool they will be able to introduce it to the community partners. This will create a direct line of contact with the community members. By using Wiggio within our Bonner organization, we will be better able to streamline and decrease the time spent sending out individual emails to the Bonner leaders. It will also act as a central hub of information so that we can increase the accountability of each individual member.
- Google Documents: Google documents are another social media tool that better facilitates group work. This social media tool helps with revision and editing process as well as always having access to the most current version of a document. All Bonner Leaders will be required to have a Gmail account so that we have access to Google documents as well as to all the other Goggle tools Google Reader, Photo sharing with Picasa, Google Calendar, Gmail, and Google chat.
- Google Earth: Google Earth is an important social media tool that can be an effective instrument for teaching. This tool allows us to see a visual of all our communities and community organizations that we partner with. This will be helpful when we send directions to our monthly Service Corps trainings as well as other special service events. We have already started to make community site profiles, complete with pictures of the site and staff members and volunteers, history, hours of operation, contact info, and volunteer information. This information will be able to access by everyone, and we hope to increase the overall visibility and facilitate network building with all of these community based programs. Google Earth can also be used for such activities as community asset mapping, explaining the inequities in a particular region, and discussions on the concept of space and how it relates to community and regional planning in the past and for the future. Community Asset Mapping allows us to present the question, "What's in your community and how does it influence you?" Google Maps and Google earth are great tools to allow students to explore the world in which they live. We will facilitate workshops on basic Internet Use (Search Engines, E-mail, navigating etc.), organizing through the internet, how to upload pictures and video as well as other media, give lessons on how to edit video and sound and introduce social networking (Wiggio, wiki).
Link to Campus Organizing Strategies
UNM is working to integrate social media tools with their overarching CLPS programs, including the NM Civic Engagement initiative as well as AmeriCorps program. They are also using it to solidify the structure of their Bonner Leader Program, which is newer. In addition, they are tapping into strong practice on areas such as training, enrichment, and reflection.
