Platforms

  • PBwiki: this is the wiki platform being used by the Bonner Network and many of its member campuses.
  • Wetpaint: this wiki platform incorporates more social networking features than pbwiki (i.e., contributor photos, profiles, etc.)
  • Wikia: this platform uses the same software that runs Wikipedia

Ideas

  • Create campus wiki (see sample campus wiki below) to promote & manage service projects (wikis like this one are great platforms for collaborative writing, sharing documents, posting video on service sites, calendar, to do lists, Bonner constitutions, resource links, etc.)
    • Include wiki pages for each service project and working group or leadership committee with links from the campus wiki home page
    • In addition, we need a way for campuses to find each other's wiki pages to share across common activities (such as Alternative Spring Break Projects, service immersion trips, strategies for organizing, and so on)
    • Sample Campus Service Center wiki.

Examples

  • Campus sites:
  • Related wiki sites:
    • We used serve.pbwiki.com (this website) to develop our Learn & Serve Student Social Media grant.
    • BonnerNetwork.pbwiki.com  — we're moving the Bonner Foundation's Resources to this wiki from our main website (www.bonner.org) to encourage more contributions and collaboration on resource development from within the Bonner community
    • PolicyOptions.pbwiki.com — set up to collaboratively develop and share issue briefs using the PolicyOptions.org Issue Brief format.
    • wikipediai
  • Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania has created a wiki for their MountainService office, which outlines various community service opportunities for students and is easy to edit as needs change in the community
  • BonnerNetwork.pbwiki.com (linked to from the Bonner Foundation website) to share best practices, tools, links to campus web pages (i.e., Facebook groups, campus wikis, etc)
    • As noted above, across our campus programs, many schools are doing similar types of activity but currently do not have a platform for best sharing that information.  For example, more than 25 schools have conducted trips to the Gulf in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and some have developed innovative strategies for education (using Spike Lee's movie), reflection (live blogging), and enhancing impact.  But these strategies need to be shared
  • From Campus Surveys of Social Media Usage
    • We have a wiki for one partnership program. I am not sure it is really being utilized fully.
    • The wiki makes it easy for all members of the staff to see the progress of certain documents.
    • We use a wiki as a mechamnism for studnets to submit ptoposals for presentations of there service projects.
    • We used the wiki in my film production class to upload video to share with the rest of the class. Some of us needed footage that another group had so we all just uploaded our footage so anyone who needed it in the class could use it.
    • Using it to discuss new Bonner Center For Civic Engagement and Servant Leadership at Centre.
    • We've only used Wiki on a limited basis, since it's fairly new. However, it's been a great site for developing networks and creating communication between different Bonners schools.
